Rabbi Shalom Yosef Elyashiv

The Judenrat within each ghetto was composed of Jewish leaders, scribes, and rabbis, were held responsible by the Nazis to enforce orders and to attempt to provide basic services for the ghettoized Jews. Many of Jewish scribes boldly refused to hand over their ghetto’s Jews for deportation and death and were willing to suffer the consequences of death themselves. Jewish scribes dedicated themselves, even in the darkest hours of the Holocaust, to study and preserve the treasured scrolls of the Torah as vital to their Jewish communities. So many of these scribes poured over the Scriptures day and night for answers from God for the devastating circumstances their people faced daily.
